Chocolate Passes Clinical Trial Test for Artery and Heart Health: Daily supplements of a flavonoid-rich chocolate may reduce biochemical markers of arterial hardening and boost heart health, say results of a randomized controlled trial -
The health benefits of antioxidant-rich COCOA have received much recognition in recent years, with positive findings from a number of studies impacting consumer awareness. According to research from the University of Barcelona in Spain, and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, consumption of antioxidant-rich chocolate containing 495 mg of polyphenols led to reductions in levels of inflammatory compounds, which contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. All study participants, at an average age of 70, were deemed high risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), since they were diabetic, smokers, hypertensive, obese and/or had raised LDL or low HDL cholesterol levels and a family history of early CHD. The participants consumed either skim milk or skim milk plus Cocoa powder for four weeks, and the results showed that blood levels of biomarkers promoting inflammation were significantly lower following consumption of the Cocoa plus milk intervention than following consumption of the milk alone (read article below for trial details). To date, few human trials have focused on the study of anti-inflammatory effects of Cocoa with mixed results, but the new findings suggest that regular consumption of nutritional doses of Cocoa may have an effect on all initial phases of the atherosclerotic process in subjects at high risk of CHD, and the anti-inflammatory effects may contribute to the overall benefits of Cocoa consumption against atherosclerosis. Chocolate manufacturers are using high Cocoa content (over 70 percent) as a means of differentiation.

According to new research from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and reported in the European Journal of Heart Failure, increased intakes of Omega-3 Fatty Acids may protect diabetics from heart failure, and a protective effect of high intakes of Omega-3 Fatty Acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) was also observed in women. Non-diabetic men in this study, however, did not receive the same benefits from high intakes of the Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Omega-3 Fatty Acids, most notably DHA and EPA, have been linked to a wide-range of health benefits, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and certain cancers, good development of a baby during pregnancy, joint health and improved behaviour and mood, so the results of this study do go against a study published earlier this year in the European Heart Journal by researchers from the U.S. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. In that study, the highest intake of marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids were linked to a general reduction in the risk of heart failure by thirty-three percent. Scientists and health authorities are increasingly persuaded that the intake of fish - even in small amounts - will protect against the risk of fatal myocardial infarction. Because the new study in an older Dutch population did not confirm the hypothesis of a protective effect of fish intake against heart failure; and other, previous studies of older adults did report a risk reduction of about twenty percent for one to two weekly servings of fish, a protective effect of EPA plus DHA against heart failure in subgroups like diabetics cannot be excluded. Thus, the current findings warrant further studies.
